If you follow me on Twitter and Instagram, you know my A race for 2019 is the Mohican 100.  I’ve been doing a lot of base miles getting ready, including signing up for a B race, Ohio Backyard Ultra.  Besides having the mental game to complete a ultra distance, you need to have a solid nutrition and hydration plan.  A sour stomach, not eating enough, eating too much, can lead to a bad race.  One of the foods I’ve been training with are the Food Groove Mission Superfood Bites.  When the opportunity came up to try the bites, I immediately wanted to give them a go.  I was super excited when I was selected.

I was mailed a box of ten pouches with three different flavors:  Mother Earth, Holy Truffle Punch, and The Nutty Adventure.  I have tried all the flavors, and The Nutty Adventure is my favorite.  Because, who doesn’t love Peanut Butter.  All the flavors are yummy, but I just have an affinity for peanut butter.

Midrun 13 miler snack.

So, training for a 100 miler, my shorter runs range from 6-12 miles.  My longer runs can range from 16-28 miles.  Because of the long mileage, I usually carry my pack, which is always filled with different food.  The bites have easily become a staple on my runs.  I am typically not a snacker or a dessert person, so I have only used the bites on my runs.

What I love:

Getting my pack together for a long day on the trails.
  • I can pronounce all the ingredients. They are all whole ingredients.  For example, The Nutty Adventures lists *Dates, *Pumpkin Seeds, *Peanut Butter (Peanuts), *Goji Berries, *Golden Berries, *Cacao Nibs, Almond Protein (Non-GMO), *Unsweetened Coconut Chips (Coconut), *Almonds, *Almond Flour (Almonds), *Açaí Powder, *Chia Seeds, *Rooibos Powder, New Zealand Manuka Honey UMF 16+ (*denotes organic ingredient).
  • The bites are exactly that, bites.  Later in those miles, chewing can be a chore.  Bite sized and portioned bites make them easy to eat.  They come in a pouch, so I can eat one or two bites at a time and continue on my way.
  • They are not sticky.  I’ve run in freezing cold, and 70ish days.  The bites do not get sticky.  Nothing is worse than having sticky hands on a run.
  • No upset tummy!  The bites are not too sweet.  I do not like overly sweet foods. It just seems to turn my stomach. Having the natural sweeteners in the bites agree with my stomach.
